BTS Makes History Again: Dominates Oricon Charts with 'Butter' and 'Dynamite'

Boy group BTS has set another record in Japan.

According to the Reiwa (Japanese calendar year starting in 2019) Rankings released by Oricon on Wednesday, BTS' single CD "Butter," which was released in July 2021, topped the "Combined Single Rankings" in terms of sales by work.

The ranking is based on sales in Japan from May 2019 to January 2024. This is the first time an overseas artist has ever topped the Oricon Chronological Ranking's Combined Singles Ranking.

The single CD, "Butter," features instrumental versions of two songs: the song of the same name that BTS released in May 2021 and the new song "Permission to Dance. The album was streamed more than 3.2 million times and sold more than 230,000 digital singles during the ranking period, totaling 3,344,886 points.

BTS once again proved its unrivaled popularity by topping the Combined Singles Ranking, surpassing YOASOBI, one of Japan's hottest artists.

In addition to this, BTS's single "Dynamite," released in August 2020, is ranked fourth on the list with 2,897,165 points. "Dynamite" includes the original song and an instrumental version, as well as four remix tracks: Acoustic, EDM, Tropical, and Poolside.

"Butter" was so popular upon its release that it spent eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Oricon's Weekly Streaming Rankings, and "Permission to Dance" was ranked No. 1 on the 2021 Oricon Annual Rankings in the Combined Singles Ranking for sales by title.
